Druk Path Trek – A Scenic Himalayan Traverse

This is a relatively short, moderate-grade trek connecting the Paro and Thimphu valleys, crossing a scenic chain of mountains that separates the two. The route passes through sparsely populated highlands, and one of its most fascinating features is the presence of crystal-clear lakes rich with fish. In May, the area is transformed by spectacular rhododendron blooms, carpeting the landscape in vibrant color.

Day-by-Day Highlights

Distance: 8 km | Duration: 3 hours | Altitude: 3,400m
Drive from Paro to Ozone Villa via the National Museum (approx. 30 minutes). The trek begins with a gradual ascent to Jele La Pass, leading to Jele Dzong, a fortress in ruins perched on a scenic ridge.
Meals & filtered water included throughout the trek.
Overnight: Tented Campsite

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 3–4 hours | Altitude: 3,780m
Trek through thick alpine forests of rhododendron to a scenic saddle at 3,590m, with panoramic views of Mount Chomolhari (7,314m). Keep an eye out for the colorful Monal pheasant, a frequent visitor in this region. Camp near a traditional yak herder’s settlement.

Distance: 11 km | Duration: 6–7 hours | Altitude: 3,870m
Follow the ridge trail to Jangchu La Pass (4,180m), and descend towards Jimilang Tsho, also known as Sand Ox Lake, famed for its giant trout. Enjoy excellent views of Mt. Jichu Drake (6,989m), the guardian deity of Paro.

Distance: 11 km | Duration: 4 hours | Altitude: 4,040m
Today’s trail weaves through dwarf rhododendrons, passing Janetsho Lake and various yak herder camps. A brief climb leads to the Simkota Tsho area, known for its abundance of trout.

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 6–7 hours
Start with a gentle ascent to a saddle at 4,180m, crossing Phume La Pass (4,210m) adorned with prayer flags. On clear days, enjoy panoramic views of Mount Gangkhar Puensum (7,541m)—the world’s highest unclimbed peak—and surrounding ranges. Descend past Thujidrag Goemba, a cliff-hugging meditation retreat, and continue through juniper and blue pine forests to Phajoding Goemba (3,870m), a revered pilgrimage site.
Complete your trek with a downhill walk to the trailhead, where you’ll be transferred by road to your hotel.
