This moderate-level trek leads you through high-altitude landscapes scattered with beautiful glacial lakes, giving rise to its name—the Thousand Lakes Trek. The route is rich in alpine flora, birdlife, and stunning meadows, offering an immersive communion with nature. Trekkers are also rewarded with breathtaking views of major Himalayan giants such as Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, Masang Gang, Tsenda Gang, and Gangchhenta.

Day-by-Day Highlights

Distance: 15 km | Duration: 4 hours | Altitude: 3,350m
The trek begins at Khoma, about an hour’s drive from Thimphu. The trail gently ascends through alpine flora and bird-rich forests. After a two-hour climb, a large rock platform offers panoramic views of the valley. Continue walking for another two hours to reach Gur, your campsite nestled among wildflowers.

Distance: 12 km | Duration: 5 hours | Altitude: 4,300m
Today’s route winds through lush meadows and a vibrant display of wildflowers. At 4,240m, the pass opens up stunning views of the Dagala Range and nearby yak herder camps. The day ends at a campsite beside Utsho Lake, known for its population of golden trout.

Spend the day exploring nearby lakes—Relitsho, Hentsho, or Jametsho—each surrounded by pristine alpine wilderness.

Distance: 8 km | Duration: 4 hours | Altitude: 4,000m
After a brief 30-minute walk, a panoramic view reveals some of the tallest Himalayan peaks including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Masang Gang, Gangchhenta, Tsenda Gang, and Jichu Drake. This route is also known for sightings of the Himalayan Monal pheasant. Camp at Panka, located in a serene alpine meadow.

Distance: 8 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Altitude: 3,080m
The trail crosses several moderate mountain passes and is rich in birdlife. After the final pass—Tale La (4,180m)—descend gradually to Talikha Goempa and then further to Tsheregang, where you’ll camp for the night. From this location, enjoy a sweeping view of Thimphu Valley.

Descend from the monastery to a feeder road that leads to the village of Chamgang, marking the end of your trek. Upon completion, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
